Fish cakes

Traditional fish cakes used to be made with salt fish and fried in salt pork fat. These are made with fresh fish and fried in butter or olive oil for a healtier choice but are still delicious.

Newfoundland Recipes

2-3 pounds of fresh fish fillets (Cod or Pickerel)
4-5 medium sized potatoes
3 Tbsp butter
2 eggs (beaten)
1/3 onion, chopped
2 Tbsp fresh (or ½ tsp dried) parsley
Sea salt & Pepper
Olive oil


  1. Steam fish 15 – 20 minutes
  2. Boil potatoes until soft, drain and mash.
  3. Add steamed fish and mash.
  4. Add butter, eggs, onion, parsley, and pepper.
  5. Mix well
  6. Form into small cakes, roll in flour and fry in olive oil until golden-brown, 3 – 4 minutes on each side


Note: Add a little salt to potatoes and fish when cooking.

Cooking time: 3-4 minutes
Servings: 4-6
