Raisin Sweet Bread

I usually make this bread to be eaten during Christmas but it is great anytime!

4-5 loaves

9 cups white flour - plus 1 cup for mixing
1 tsp salt
2 packs yeast
⅓ cup melted unsalted butter
½ cup brown sugar
1 cup molasses
2 tbsp cinnamon
1 tbsp allspice
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cloves
2 cups dark raisins


  1. Dissolve the 2 packs yeast (fast-rising or traditional) in 1 cup warm water with 2 tsp sugar. Let rise for 10 minutes.
  2. Mix the flour, salt, sugar, spices and raisins together in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Mix the molasses with 1 cup of hot water.
  4. Prepare 2 cups of very warm water in a bowl.
  5. Mix the yeast, molasses and melted butter together and add to the dry ingredients.
  6. Stir well and add the remainder of the water, stirring a little at a time, until you have formed a soft dough.
  7. Knead with your hands until all the flour has disappeared. Put a little butter on your hands while kneading.
  8. Cover and let rise 30-40 minutes.
  9. Knead again and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  10. Grease 4 or 5 loaf pans.
  11. Cut the dough into small pieces and form into a bun, 3 buns for each loaf pan.
  12. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
  13. Bake at 350ºF for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  14. Remove bread from pans and grease tops with butter
